AI SEO tools: writing is not the same as measuring if they cite you
Some AI SEO tools draft, others audit, and almost none tell you if ChatGPT cites your site. Here are the ones I find most useful in each case.
If you search for AI SEO tools, you want to get to the point: which ones are actually useful. I’m skipping the typical top-40 list to show you the ones I use.
I’ll tell you how I use them, and why, on any of my projects: one tool drafts, another reviews a URL, and another tells you whether ChatGPT and the other LLMs cite you.
If you’re looking for SEO tools in general, read the article on the SEO tools I use. This one is about the tools built around AI (there is some overlap).
What an AI SEO tool is for
It does one concrete job: draft, review a URL, or measure whether a model cites you. It doesn’t “do SEO” on its own.
A few months ago an agency in Valencia sent me a clinic. They had asked a writer for a ChatGPT post on dental implants in Valencia. Seven days later the URL was neither on Google’s first page nor in ChatGPT when you asked for implant clinics in that city. They had 1,400 words, but zero rankings.
That’s why I start with this week’s job, not the longest list. If the job is to publish, you need a draft. If the job is to lift a URL that already ranks, you need on-page. If the job is to know whether the assistants name you, you need measurement. The free AI visibility checker is fine for a first look at one URL. It doesn’t replace a history.
The best AI SEO tools, by job
If the job is drafting, auditing, or measuring citations, the tool is not the same.
| Job | What I use | What I look at |
|---|---|---|
| Article draft | ChatGPT or Claude | Whether the text answers the query, not whether it “sounds like AI” |
| Draft with a brand tone | Jasper or Writesonic | Whether the tone holds across ten articles, not whether you ship more posts |
| A URL that already exists | Surfer, Frase or NeuronWriter | Whether it covers what already ranks, not whether the “score” hits 90 |
| Ideas and content gaps | Ahrefs, Semrush or SE Ranking | What the rival ranks for and I don’t |
| Whether ChatGPT cites you | TrueRanker | Mentions and citations, per engine |
That last row is the one almost nobody puts on the list. Writing and measuring whether a model links you are two different jobs. The AI visibility index explains the metric; here I tell you which tool I use to watch it.
AI tools for SEO, one by one
Each of these covers one job. If you subscribe to all of them “just in case”, you pay three times for the same work.
ChatGPT: the draft, not the ranking
ChatGPT writes a first text. It doesn’t tell you whether you rank.

I use it for an outline or a draft I then cut. I don’t use it to “publish and done”. The writer at that clinic shipped twelve posts in a day. Three weeks later Search Console had no impressions on the new URLs. The model hadn’t lied: it had written. The ranking work wasn’t done.
The price is on their site. I pay for ChatGPT Plus; the free plan runs out when you paste a long brief.
Claude: the other chat, when the draft sounds stiff
Claude does the same job as ChatGPT: a draft. Not a ranking.

I open it when ChatGPT’s draft reads like a brochure. A lawyer asked me for a guide to probate in Catalonia. ChatGPT’s first pass sounded like a leaflet. Claude’s you could read out loud. It still won’t tell you if you rank. It still won’t tell you if Claude cites you.
The price is on their site. If you already pay for ChatGPT Plus, you don’t have to open another account the same Monday.
Jasper: brand tone, not the ranking
Jasper is for a team that already has an established brand voice and publishes a lot of content. Not for picking the keyword.
A travel agency showed me eight landings for trips to Japan. The tone was the same on all eight. The problem was somewhere else: three of those URLs were cannibalizing the same query. Jasper doesn’t warn you about that. Copy.ai sits in the same drawer.
The price is on their site. If you write the posts yourself and publish two a month, ChatGPT is enough.
Writesonic: SEO templates
Writesonic is what people open when they want the title, the meta and the draft in one place. Templates, brand tone, meta tags.

A supplements store sent me a batch of 20 product pages made there. The metas were fine. The 20 URLs said the same thing with different words. They had a template. They didn’t have search intent.
The price is on their site. It doesn’t replace Surfer: it writes. It doesn’t measure whether a model cites you.
Surfer SEO: the URL that already exists
Surfer SEO helps when you already have a page and want to see what the pages that rank are leaving out.

A B2B software client had a guide sitting at position 8 for best CRM for SMBs. Surfer flagged three questions the top three answered and they didn’t. They rewrote those sections and left the H1. Five weeks later they were at position 4. That’s on-page with data, not “a new article with AI”.
The price is on their site. I have seen it from 79 dollars a month. If you only need to draft, ChatGPT is enough. If you’re rewriting URLs that already get clicks, this is the right tool for the job.
Frase and NeuronWriter: on-page without paying for Surfer
Frase and NeuronWriter do the same job as Surfer: look at what already ranks and show you the content gaps. They show up on lists as the option for a smaller budget.
Frase will also build a draft from keywords. NeuronWriter stays closer to the on-page editor. A freelance consultant put both on the table because Surfer didn’t fit the client’s retainer. They picked NeuronWriter, rewrote a guide that already had clicks, and left ChatGPT for the rest.
I have seen Frase from 38 dollars a month. NeuronWriter’s price is on their site. Neither measures whether ChatGPT cites you.
Ahrefs, Semrush and SE Ranking: keywords and ideas, not the copy
Ahrefs, Semrush and SE Ranking put AI into keyword research and content-gap work. They’re not an editor.
I use them to see what the rival ranks for and I don’t. A mattress store asked me for “ChatGPT articles”. Before I opened the chat, Ahrefs showed the competitor ranking for memory foam mattress 135 and the client had no URL. The intent was missing from the architecture. It wasn’t a writing problem.
SE Ranking is the simpler suite of the three and also talks about GEO. I have seen it from 87.20 euros a month. Ahrefs and Semrush: on their sites. If you already pay for one, don’t buy another just for the chatbot.
AccuRanker: rankings and LLM visibility
AccuRanker is a rank tracker. AccuLLM adds visibility in LLMs and AI Overviews: alerts and share of voice.
If your job is “where am I on Google today, and do I show up in the AI summary”, it fits. I don’t use it to see whether ChatGPT or Perplexity link you as a source. That’s a different row.
The price is on their site.
TrueRanker: whether ChatGPT cites you
Writing doesn’t tell you whether ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude or Perplexity name you or link you. I measure that in AI visibility.
The same implant clinic had the post live. On Google, nothing. In ChatGPT, when someone asked for clinics in Valencia, three competitors came back. Without that screenshot I wouldn’t have known the problem wasn’t just the title.

TrueRanker wins this row: mentions and citations, per engine, in the same place I already watch rankings. It doesn’t win the drafting row. ChatGPT or Claude write a better first draft. Surfer, Frase or NeuronWriter review a live URL better. The difference between a mention and a citation is what I refuse to mash into one number.
You can try it for 14 days, no credit card. Plans are on pricing.
How to choose without opening ten accounts
Pick by this week’s job, not by the longest list.
If this week you need to publish, open ChatGPT or Claude and a brief. If the team already has an established brand voice and publishes a lot of content, Jasper or Writesonic. If you need to lift a URL that already gets clicks, open Surfer, Frase or NeuronWriter. If the meeting question is “does ChatGPT cite us?”, open AI visibility and look at mentions and citations. That’s the job the others don’t cover.
Don’t start three trials on the same Monday. I have seen a freelancer with ChatGPT Plus, Surfer and Semrush open, and not one ranking saved. They had tools. They didn’t know what they wanted to find out.
Frequently asked questions
Which are the best AI tools for SEO?
It depends on the job. To draft, ChatGPT or Claude. For a URL that already exists, Surfer, Frase or NeuronWriter. To see if a model cites you, TrueRanker. The table above is the rule to follow; there is no one winner for every Monday.
Does Google penalize AI-written text?
Not for having used a model. Google cares whether the text is useful, not whether a person typed it. Hollow, copied text that doesn’t answer the query won’t rank, whoever wrote it.
Can ChatGPT do SEO on its own?
No. It gives you a draft. It doesn’t pick the keyword, read the SERP, or tell you if you rank. If you publish what comes out of the chat and close the laptop, you haven’t done SEO.
Do you need a paid tool if you already have ChatGPT?
To draft, sometimes not. To review a URL against what already ranks, or to measure citations across engines, yes: ChatGPT doesn’t keep a history of whether it names you. That’s where it is worth paying.
Measure whether ChatGPT cites you, not only whether it writes
