100% client-side online processing. Nothing is uploaded to our servers.

The file does not say whether an assistant cites you. AI Visibility does.

Trusted worldwide

Trusted by thousands of SEO pros

From solo consultants to global agencies — teams choose TrueRanker to unify SEO and AI-search visibility.

How it works

How to build an llms.txt file in three steps

Select your pages. The file is generated online in your browser without sending any data to our servers.

  1. Add your pages

Enter a URL, paste a list, or upload a sitemap, a .txt file, or a CSV with titles and descriptions. If your sitemap is an index, you can import child sitemaps directly.

  2. Select the pages that matter

A sitemap lists every URL on your site; an llms.txt file is a curated selection. Uncheck secondary pages, adjust titles, and add concise descriptions where helpful.

  3. Download and publish it

Save llms.txt and place it in your domain’s root directory, alongside robots.txt, so it’s accessible at yourdomain.com/llms.txt.

Specifications

What goes into the file, and what does not

Six facts about the file this page builds. None of them is a promise that an assistant will cite you.

The file the spec describes

A Markdown file with the site name as a heading, a one-line summary, and sections of links. That is the proposal published at llmstxt.org.

You choose the pages

The download includes only the rows you leave checked. A sitemap is a source of URLs, not the file itself.

A sitemap you already have

Upload sitemap.xml, or the same file gzipped. The page reads the address of each page. If the file is a sitemap index, it lists the other sitemaps and asks you to upload those.

A list or a CSV

Paste one URL per line, or upload a .txt file or a CSV with url, title, and description. The CSV is the import that can arrive with the names already written.

Titles from the path

If a URL has no title, the last segment of the path is used automatically (/pricing/ becomes Pricing). Descriptions are optional, and external pages are never fetched.

100% local online processing

The file is compiled locally in your browser. No data is sent to TrueRanker servers, with no account required and no daily limits.

The file

A guide for AI assistants, not a ranking signal for Google

robots.txt tells crawlers where they may go. A sitemap lists URLs for them to fetch. llms.txt does neither. It suggests which pages are worth reading, in Markdown, at the root of the domain.

It is a proposal, not a ranking factor. Google has said Search does not use it, and the studies published so far do not show that having the file wins more citations. We wrote that up, with the sources, on the blog.

It is still a clean map for a tool that does read it, including a coding agent you point at the file yourself.

  • A heading, a one-line summary, then sections of links
  • Guidance, not access control
  • Optional for every crawler. Nothing is required to fetch it
  • Worth publishing when you want the map, not because it moves rankings

What the file is not

  • Not a replacement for robots.txt
  • Not a sitemap
  • Not a signal Google Search uses
  • Not proof that ChatGPT cites you
AI Visibility

Publishing the file does not guarantee AI citations

Publishing llms.txt is the small job. The question after that is whether ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and the other assistants mention your brand or cite your pages when someone asks.

AI Visibility in TrueRanker re-runs the prompts you care about each week and keeps mentions and citations apart, with share of voice against the competitors you track. Which assistants a plan includes is on that page, not on this one.

  • Mentions and citations counted separately
  • Share of voice against the competitors you follow
  • The text of each answer, kept
  • A baseline you can compare the next time you change the file

What the module shows

  • Whether you were mentioned
  • Whether a page of yours was cited
  • Share of voice on that prompt
  • The answer itself

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about the llms.txt generator

Everything you need to know about llms.txt files, technical specifications, and measuring AI search visibility.

What is an llms.txt file?

llms.txt is a proposed Markdown file at the root of a domain. It names the site, summarises it in one line, and lists the pages worth reading, with a short description when you write one. It is a suggestion to an assistant, not an instruction a crawler has to follow.

How is llms.txt different from robots.txt and a sitemap?

robots.txt controls access: it says which paths a crawler may fetch. A sitemap lists URLs so a crawler can find them. llms.txt does not block anything and it does not list every URL. It points at the pages you consider the important ones, written in Markdown.

Does Google use llms.txt?

Google has confirmed Search doesn’t use llms.txt. Having the file won’t help or hurt your organic rankings or AI Overviews visibility. While Chrome Lighthouse can audit its presence, that doesn’t mean Google Search uses it for ranking.

Will this file make ChatGPT cite my site?

No. Published studies show no correlation between having an llms.txt file and winning more citations in ChatGPT or other LLMs. To find out if AI models reference your brand, you need dedicated tracking—which is what TrueRanker’s AI Visibility module does.

What if my sitemap is an index of other sitemaps?

A sitemap index does not contain pages. It contains the addresses of other sitemap files. This page lists those files and asks you to upload them. It does not download them for you.

Do you write the descriptions?

No. A title is taken from the last part of the URL when you do not supply one, and you can edit it. A description is added only when you type it, or when it is already in the CSV you upload. The pages themselves are not fetched.

Where do I put the file?

At the root of the domain, next to robots.txt, named llms.txt in lowercase. It should answer at yourdomain.com/llms.txt. How you upload it depends on the host: a static site copies the file into the public folder, and some CMSs have a setting that publishes it.

What is llms-full.txt, and does this tool make one?

llms-full.txt is the long version of the same idea: the full text of the important pages in one file, so a tool does not have to fetch each link. This generator builds the short map, llms.txt. It does not collect page text.

How often should I regenerate the file?

When the set of important pages changes: a new docs section, a retired product, a renamed URL. The file is a curated list, so a weekly rebuild of every URL on the site is not the point. Download a new copy and replace the one at the root.

Do you store the file or the URLs?

No. The file is built in your browser and the download stays on your machine. Nothing on this page is sent to TrueRanker.
