What this measures

Unaided rank is not the same as tracking your own prompts

A chat answer has no page two. Either the model recommends a handful of brands in your category and yours is among them, or it is not — and that outcome is invisible to every tool that only watches Google keywords.

The AI Visibility Index answers a different question from a prompt tracker: when buyers ask about the market without naming you, who gets recommended, in what order, from which sources, and next to which rivals. That is unaided category awareness — the brand metric AI search actually needs.

  • Unaided awareness — prompts that never name your brand
  • Average position in the recommendation shortlist
  • Industry leaderboard beyond the rivals you picked
  • Cited sources and brand co-occurrence in the category

Capabilities

Everything the index does, in six parts

Six areas a category AI Visibility Index has to get right — and the details that separate a downloadable study from a weekly rank you can act on.

Unaided category rank

Measure whether models recommend you when the prompt never mentions your brand. That is the awareness signal classic brand tracking was built for — applied to AI search.

  • Prompts without your brand name in the query
  • Category rank alongside the composite index
  • Comparable across ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and more

Average position

Frequency alone lies. Being named first drives attention; being named last is almost a miss. The index weights how often you appear by where you sit in the shortlist.

  • Mean position across recommending answers
  • Movement week over week on the same category
  • Visible beside the composite score, not buried

Industry leaderboard

See who owns the answer in your market — not only the competitors you chose to track. The leaderboard is the category view; your project rivals stay available when you drill in.

  • Ordered brands by index score in the category
  • Filter by surface when one engine disagrees with another
  • Your row highlighted so the gap is obvious

Cited sources in the category

Models lean on a short list of domains when they answer niche questions. Knowing that list is how you plan citation-earning work instead of guessing which sites matter.

  • Top sources ranked by citations in your category
  • Share of prompts where each domain is referenced
  • Mentions versus citations kept as separate signals

Brand co-occurrence

Which brands appear together in the same AI answer — and which appear without you. That pairing is the competitive set the model actually uses.

  • Pairs that co-occur most often in your category
  • Rivals present in answers where you are absent
  • A content brief written from the gaps, not from a spreadsheet

Category reports, broad to niche

Run the index on a wide market and on a segment. Preferences change by audience; measuring both stops a niche win from disappearing inside a broad average. AI Overviews and AI Mode sit in the same coverage set as the chat engines.

  • Broad categories and niche segments on one account
  • Eight surfaces including Google AI Overviews and AI Mode
  • Export and client reports beside Google rankings
Getting started

From zero to a category baseline in four steps

Most projects are configured in an afternoon. The first category scan lands within the week — no enterprise onboarding call required.

  1. Create the project and name your brand

Add your domain and every way the market writes your name — the brand, its spelling variants and the domain itself. The index looks for all of them inside unaided recommendations, so a mention still counts when the model gets your capitalisation wrong.

  2. Pick the category you compete in

Choose a broad market ("SEO tools") or a niche ("rank tracker for agencies"). The same brand can sit in the top five of one and outside the top twenty of the other — that is the point of measuring both.

  3. Read the first weekly index scan

Every week the category panel is re-run across ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity, Grok, DeepSeek, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode. The first scan gives you your category rank, the composite index, average position, the sources models cite in your niche, and which brands co-occur with you.

  4. Where you lose, open the tracker

The index tells you that a rival owns the recommendation in your category. The AI Visibility Tracker shows the exact prompt and the stored answer text behind that loss — so the content brief writes itself from the gap, not from a guess.

What you get

The whole feature list, without the hedging

Included on every paid plan from $39/mo, in the same project as your Google rankings. No separate AI Visibility Index invoice.

Eight surfaces, one index

ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity, Grok, DeepSeek, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode scored the same way for the category — not just the six chat engines.

Weekly category refresh

The index re-runs once a week. What you read is a time series of category rank and score, not a one-off snapshot you have to remember to take.

Unaided awareness panel

Prompts that never name your brand. That is the measurement that mirrors classic brand tracking — whether the model recommends you when nobody asked for you.

Average recommendation position

Being named first is not the same as being named last. The index weights how often you appear by where you sit in the shortlist.

Mentions and citations at category level

Never averaged into one figure. You know whether models name you in the category and whether they treat your domain as a source worth linking.

Industry leaderboard

See the brands that own the answer in your category — not only the rivals you chose to track in a project.

Cited sources in the category

The domains AI leans on when it answers questions in your niche. That list is the citation map for the quarter.

Brand co-occurrence

Which competitors appear beside you in the same answer, and which ones appear without you. Pairings are the competitive set the model actually uses.

Same project as Google rankings

The index lives beside your rank tracker and client reports — included on every paid plan from $39/mo, not a second product with a second invoice.

A category index belongs next to your rankings — not in a second product with a demo gate.

Semrush’s AI Visibility Index is framed as an enterprise study and AIO motion; Evertune’s AI Brand Index sits on a dedicated GEO platform sold via demo. TrueRanker puts the category index in the same project as your Google positions, on every paid plan, starting at $39 a month.

The saving is the smaller half of the argument. When organic rankings slip and unaided AI mentions dry up a fortnight later, both movements sit on one screen — instead of reconciling a PDF study, a GEO login and a rank tracker and hoping the dates line up.

FAQ

AI Visibility Index, answered

What is an AI Visibility Index?

An AI Visibility Index is a category-level score of how often — and how high — AI engines recommend your brand when someone asks about your market without naming you. It is not a Google ranking and it is not a one-off URL check: it is a leaderboard of unaided brand awareness across ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity, Grok, DeepSeek, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, refreshed on a schedule so you can see the trend.

How is this different from the AI Visibility Tracker?

The tracker measures the prompts you choose — your questions, your competitors, the literal answer text stored every week. The index measures the category: unaided recommendations, average position, who leads the industry leaderboard, which sources models cite, and which brands co-occur. Use the index to see where you sit in the market; open the tracker when you need the exact answer that put a rival ahead of you.

How is this different from the SEO Visibility Index?

The SEO Visibility Index is the official Sistrix score for organic Google visibility of your project domain. The AI Visibility Index is about LLM and AI-search recommendations. Two different “index” products, two different SERPs — they are not translations of each other and they are not interchangeable metrics.

How is this different from the free AI Visibility Checker?

The free AI Visibility Checker is a one-off audit of a single URL: no category leaderboard, no history, no account. The AI Visibility Index is continuous category measurement inside a TrueRanker project — weekly scans, rank, score, sources and co-occurrence over time.

How is this different from AI Overviews in the rank tracker?

In the rank tracker, AI Overviews and AI Mode are columns on a keyword SERP: whether Google showed an AI answer for that query and whether it named or linked you. In the AI Visibility Index they are category surfaces — part of how often your brand is recommended in the market as a whole, alongside the six chat engines. Same Google AI features, different job.

What is unaided awareness in AI?

Unaided awareness means the model names your brand even though the prompt never mentioned you — for example “best rank tracker for agencies” with no brand in the question. That is the closest AI equivalent of classic brand tracking: whether you are top of mind when a buyer asks the category, not when they already typed your name.

How is the AI Visibility Index score calculated?

It is a single 0–100 figure from four published parts: unaided mention rate at 40%, average recommendation position at 35%, citation rate at 15%, and surface coverage at 10%. The weights are shown beside the total, so a drop always points at a specific part of the formula rather than a black box. Category rank (#4 in “SEO software”) is the ordinal on the leaderboard; the score is this composite.

What is average recommendation position?

When an AI answer lists several brands, position is where you sit in that shortlist — first, second, third. A brand mentioned first 40% of the time outperforms a brand mentioned last 70% of the time, because position drives attention. The index weights frequency by that position instead of treating every mention as equal.

What is brand co-occurrence?

Co-occurrence counts how often two brands appear in the same AI answer. It shows which competitors the model treats as your real set — the brands named beside you — and which ones appear in answers where you are missing. That pairing list is more useful than a static competitor spreadsheet, because it comes from what the models actually say.

What are cited sources in the category?

Cited sources are the domains AI platforms use as references when they answer questions in your industry. A high citation share means models lean on that site to form answers. The index lists the top sources for your category so you can see who earns authority in AI search — and whether your own domain is among them.

How often is the Index updated?

Weekly. Category prompts are re-run once a week across the tracked surfaces. Model answers drift over days rather than hours; a weekly series gives a trend you can act on instead of noise you have to smooth. History starts when you add the category and accumulates while the project is active.

Can I report on a broad category and a niche?

Yes. Generate the index for a wide market (“SEO tools”) and for a specific segment (“rank tracker for agencies”, “local SEO software”). Preferences change by audience and price point; measuring both stops a strong niche rank from being averaged away inside a broad leaderboard.

Which plans include the AI Visibility Index?

The index is included on every paid plan, from the $39 Starter upward — there is no separate AI Visibility Index subscription and no enterprise-only gate on the module itself. What the plan decides is the wider project limits (prompts, competitors, reports) that sit beside it.

How does TrueRanker compare to Semrush’s AI Visibility Index or Evertune’s AI Brand Index?

Semrush publishes an enterprise AI Visibility Index study (large prompt corpora, industry leaderboards, source analysis) and sells AIO as Semrush for Enterprise — pricing is demo-based, not a public list price. Evertune’s AI Brand Index is a 0–100 unaided brand score with competitive benchmarking on a dedicated GEO platform, also sold via demo. TrueRanker puts a category index — unaided rank, average position, sources and co-occurrence — inside the same project as your Google rankings, from $39/mo, without a second invoice.

How can I improve my AI Visibility Index?

Raise unaided mentions and citation share in the category: publish answer-shaped content that models can quote, earn mentions from the sources your niche already cites, and close gaps where co-occurrence shows a rival in answers you miss. The index measures the outcome; the tracker’s stored answers show which prompts and arguments to fix first.

Which AI surfaces does the Index cover?

ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity, Grok and DeepSeek, plus Google AI Overviews and AI Mode as category surfaces. That set matches how buyers actually ask — chat assistants and Google’s AI answers — without claiming a proprietary multi-hundred-million prompt corpus.
